Services Utility: Font Cache Service Service Display Name (?): | Font Cache Service | Short Name (?): | Font Cache Service | Executable (?): | fontcacheservice.exe | Library (?): | None. | Depends On (?): | None. | Supports (?): | None. | Description (?): | None. | OS (?): | Vista Home/Business, Vista Server | Startup (?): | Default | Home | Workstation | Server | Minimal | Tweaked | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Disabled | Disabled | Disabled | | Explanation (?): | The font cache service is new to Windows Longhorn and I am not certain what it does. If you know anything about this service please let me know so I can post a good description. From the name I would assume it is used in keeping commonly used fonts in memory while providing the ability for them to unhook themselves after not being used. However, this is pure conjecture. As this service is new though, it is apparent that it is not critical to the operation of the system and I am pretty sure it can be disabled. However, since its function is unknown I highly recommend not disabling it, but rather set it to manual. |

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." -- The Bene Gesserit Litany of Fear from the novel Dune by Frank Herbert
